The English Revolution

Though a casual read of the Finnish press may not make it clear, the UK is in the midst of a slow-motion revolution. Brexit, xenophobia and political paralysis are order of the day - and incredible cracks have appeared in British society that few would have thought possible even one year ago. Scotland’s Prime Minister wants another referendum, Northern Ireland fears renewed violence and the high-profile right-wing political party UKIP is looking to “stand up for the English” (thank goodness Wales seems content!). There’s never been a better time for a British Studies seminar!

While we will discuss these important topics in an informal atmosphere, we will also spend a considerable amount of time thinking about changes in popular culture, the media, and the English language, as well as about the way that 2016 (and presumably the first half of 2017) was a defining year in terms of the role social media plays in the life of people living in the UK.

Thirdly, we will look outwards to see how changes in Australia, New Zealand and Canada are viewed from London - as well as thinking about how a certain Mr Trump has broken the mold as the leader of the free world.

Finally, it is worth stressing that a few of the major aims for the workshop are to begin to focus again on our beloved subject after the summer, ensure plenty of time for participants to speak together on these and other topics in English and also enjoy time together. In addition, I intend to share the resources from the course (songs, slides, listening comprehension exercises for students etc) with attendees that they can then use in their schools and colleges/sixth-forms if they wish.

I hope to see you in Oulu next August! - Tom
