BRITISH STUDIES in Helsinki

BRITISH STUDIES 2018: Mind the Gaps

The last few years have seen gaps revealed in UK society, the likes of which haven’t been seen for generations. Society has been deeply divided, nationalism rears its head and the gulf between the reporting of different media outlets/providers is startling and dangerous.

Never has the postwar UK seen such tumultuous change - and never have teachers needed to update their take on Britain more. The British studies 2018 aims to provide a snapshot of a nation in flux, to share resources and materials which can be used to follow events and to help get English teachers ready for the school year ahead.

But there’s more - we will go on a whistlestop tour of other English speaking nations and then devote time to the perilously wide - and widening - gaps in US society. We will also focus in on the important role of media literacy - and how the internet can be used to heal or exacerbate the fault lines that threaten to rupture societies throughout the western world.

I look forward to seeing you in Helsinki next August! - Tom
